bio lectures

i have an interesting biology professor. today she was going through the chapter on protein, something which i have heard dozens of times already.. But still, she made everything seem interesting and new..

remember the 4 types of interactions between amino acids.. hydrogen bonds, disulfide bonds, van der waals/hydrophobic interactions, and ionic bonds.. she said all these bonds are like relationships among people.

the peptide bonds between amino acids are the basic requirement. they provide the structural stability. these covalent bonds are like your family. always there for you and they share everything with you(electrons).

disulfide bonds are like your very very good friends- they are quite strong and stable. you will need a lot of heat ( obstacles? ) to break these bonds

ionic bonds are like BGR. attracted to each other only. not very strong. when there are stronger charges around, the bonds will break readily

hydrophobic interactions are like sitting in the MRT with ppl. not that you want to squeeze and sit so closely to other ppl. driven by circumstances only. these are the weakest..

i forgot what she said for hydrogen bonds.. sth like its only 1 to 1.. anyway it was a very interesting analogy. she mentioned a few other interesting things which i cant recall at the moment. anyway, listening to her lectures are quite fun. i dont know why ppl beside + front + back + diagonally around me were all nodding off..
